As our cities become increasingly congested, more and more people are turning to electric bikes as an alternative to taking public transport or sitting in traffic. What’s the point of owning a car if you’re moving slower than the people in the bike lane? If you’re looking to improve your commute and save the environment at the same time, an electric bike may be the right choice for you. In this ANCHEER folding electric mountain bike review, we’ll be reviewing the ANCHEER AN-EB002, one of the most popular electric bikes on the market. Before we begin, let’s look at some of the basic features.
How It Works
The ANCHEER AN-EB002 is an electric bike, which means it’s a standard bicycle with an electric motor. You can pedal the whole way if you prefer the exercise, set the motor to “low” for assistance on hills, or turn it up even higher and enjoy a fully electric ride. The more you pedal, the longer the battery will last.
This bike folds in half for easy transport. There’s a lever at the top of the frame that holds it in place, but a firm tug on the lever will allow the frame to hinge freely. Once you’ve folded the bike in half, reset the lever and it will keep the bike from opening up again. The pedals are also collapsible, so it will lie flat in a trunk, or fit in narrow spaces on public transport.
This bike is great for city riding. The horn is loud enough to be heard in traffic, and while the headlight isn’t bright enough to ride in pitch darkness, it’s bright enough to keep you visible on a city street at night. The beefy tires are good enough for trail use, but the battery and motor make this bike a little heavy for mountain biking. You can use it for that if you only have one bike, but serious mountain bikers will want something that weighs less.
How Far Can You Go?
The AN-EB002 has a range of 25-50 KM or 15.5-31 miles. This is longer than most city commutes and should be plenty to get you wherever you’re going. If you really need to go further, you can always pedal the rest of the way.
The exact range will depend on how much you’re pedaling and what kind of terrain you’re on. If you’re going downhill or pedaling on level ground, you’ll get much more distance. On the other hand, the battery will run out faster if you’re relying on motor power to get up hills. This variation explains the difference in mileage between one ANCHEER folding electric mountain bike review and another.
The maximum speed on this bike is 25 KPH or about 15.5 MPH. Needless to say, you won’t be outrunning any cars in light traffic, but this is more than fast enough for city use.
How to Use the Meter
The AN-EB002 has a waterproof electric handlebar mount that doubles as a controller and a battery meter. The five LED lights at the bottom let you know how much charge you have left, while the three lights at the top indicate what power mode you’re in; low, medium or high.
To turn the motor on, hold the “M” button for two seconds. This will put you into the default power mode, which is low. At this level, you’ll get some assistance, but the bike will only move very slowly unless you’re pedaling.
Press the “+” button to increase the power level to medium or high. At the maximum power level, you’ll be able to stop pedaling altogether if you want. Pressing the “-“ button will lower the power level, and holding the “M” button will shut the motor off altogether.
Suspension and Transmission
This bike has an a carbon steel frame, with a dual suspension on the front. The seat is a little on the hard side, so you may want to consider buying something with more padding if you go over a lot of bumps.
This is a 21-speed bike. You’ll have no trouble finding a gear ratio that’s right for your conditions. Shifting is very smooth, although you’ll need to tighten the cables now and then as you would with any bike.
There’s a metal guard beneath the main gears. On the one hand, this protects your transmission from damage. On the other hand, this gives the bike relatively low clearance, about 6 inches. Be careful mountain biking over large logs or riding over steep curbs.
Wheels and Brakes
The wheels on the AN-EB002 are manufactured from a double-layer magnesium alloy. That makes them far tougher than aluminum rims, while still being lightweight. The 26” tires are nice and fat, with plenty of cushion for going over potholes or tree roots.
The dual-disc brakes work the same as most bike brakes, with one extra feature: when you apply them, the motor automatically shuts off. This makes the bike as safe as possible if you need to stop suddenly.
When collapsed, this bike measures about 50” wide by 40” high by 6” thick. That’s not exactly tiny, but it’s small enough to put in the trunk of your car. That said, while we were creating this ANCHEER folding electric mountain bike review, we found that it’s very light for an electric bike, weighing only 25 kg, or 55 pounds. Most people still need two hands to lift it, but it’s not back-breakingly heavy.
- Relatively lightweight for an electric bike
- Collapses for easy portability
- Waterproof electronics make it safe to ride in the rain
- Three different motor settings
- Charges in only 4-6 hours
- Long enough range for most city commutes
- Relatively low top speed of 25 KPH (15.5 MPH)
- Gear protector can snag on thick logs or very aggressive curbs
- Seat is hard
